The Problem with Duct Taping
Dear readers,
If you know anything about me by this point, you are probably confused by my title. How could I use the words “problem” and “duct tape” in the same phrase unless that phrase is “duct tape can fix any problem”? Well, faithful readers, I have found fault in this beautiful art form! I will not keep you in suspense any longer; the problem with duct taping is that it is...
Know Your Meme: Pepper Spray Cop [Video - 23670] |... →
This video is pretty goofy, but it does make a few good points, particularly in the last 12ish seconds.
This event hit very close to home for me since I spent a few years of high school living in Davis, California. Many of my classmates attend this University and have been participating in these protests. It was very hard for me to watch people from my town being treated this way, especially...

My senior year we were required to do a demonstration speech and someone in my class did one about making duct tape wallets! That’s what I immediately thought of when you started your presentation. I have never seen the other various forms of duct tape art however! It’s really impressive and I’m sure it takes a lot of patience to execute each project well. What’s...

One idea that stuck out for me in your presentation was when you said that “anything that can be made, can be made out of duct tape.” Clearly people have been trying out many different ideas, with things ranging from purses and flowers all the way to prom dresses! It’s…
I do think that a social media community could develop in the future. The hobby is new....

I absolutely loved looking at all of the prom dress duct tape photos! Do you think the online communities help fuel and foster the duct tape art hobby?
Well, yes and no. I don’t think I would have ever made a dress if I hadn’t known about the prom scholarship. That online community definitely inspired me. But it hasn’t helped me learn what I’m...

I realize you’d started duct tape construction before! What are some things you have made, and how far have you come since you started (how long has it been)?
I think I started in middle school by covering my books in duct tape. I hated the texture of grocery bags on my books and many of my teachers required me to duct tape the corners anyway. So I covered most of...

First off, I found it really interesting that they have duct tape scholarships! I’ve never heard of them before. I also thought it was cool to learn that the Duct Tape brand actually provides videos on how to make some things out of duct tape. I really liked how you showed…
The only reason I can think of that there isn’t a social media community for...

How does the company interact with the nerd culture involved in duct tape design? Does it also do different social media outreach for more, er, manly and mainstream uses of duct tape?
Here’s the bizarre thing: Duck brand is the primary vendor of duct tape and they must have figured out that duct tape is pretty awful for fixing ducts. Their entire marketing...
Fantasy Football

I am not exactly what you’d call a football fan, but this presentation was still very fun and engaging for me. Two parts of your presentation struck me as very interesting. First was the physical therapist that had fantasy followers looking for advice. This is something I never would have considered, but it’s a brilliant idea. Second were the personal ads from the...

Storify: Magic and Cardistry. . .

I really enjoyed seeing your friend’s website because it really showed the role of social media in magic and cardistry in a way that is easier to relate to. I liked the idea of practiced magicians getting out there into the online community so easily. What a great way to gain credibility within that community!

My favorite part of the presentation was the youtube symphony. It made me want to look up the final product (Which I did very quickly thereafter) This is such an amazing utilization of social media, and somewhat similar to Eric Whitacre’s Youtube project.

I really liked your focus on the whole tattoo conversation thing. It seems so irrelevant! What do you think that says about the community as a whole? Does the presence of the tattoo forum make it better or worse?
The Office storify
anniehass:
Fan fiction has always been an interesting idea for me. It seems to me that you would have to be so immersed in a show/game/movie/book etc to actually create and publish your own content! So I was really surprised by the amount and quality of the fan fiction coming from the Office. That was really cool to learn about!
Buildering Storify

I enjoyed being learning about this hobby that I never knew about before. It was a bit confusing at first because “buildering” was not defined until later, so it may have been more informative to put some of this images or videos earlier on. Anyway, I really did like the videos you chose, they were fascinating.
Storify: The Office

I really was interested in this presentation because I have always followed the office. Now, during this huge change, it is interesting to see how the public opinion has changed. How surprising that the public thinks so low of the new office! Do you think there is anything that the show could have done differently to prevent this reaction?

I was totally impressed by the depth of advice given in these communities, down to things like dietary needs. This seems to be the ideal online social community! Others might use this as a standard of sorts…

My favorite part of your storify was the list of great audition songs for any part. I will likely be referencing this in the future :D And the Les Mis image did not hurt either.

My favorite part of this presentation was when you explained how you can “participate vicariously in concerts through social media”. I liked that you used a lot of personal examples.

My Tumblr Dilemma
With the deadline of the first portfolio rapidly approaching, I am plainly aware that my weak point will be my tumblr posts. While I found a rhythm with my twitter posts I never really got there with tumblr. It would be easy to say that this is because I am lazy and twitter posts are shorter and therefor easier than tumblr posts, but now I’m trying to find some deeper meaning. My lack of...
Response: editing papers →
bysbigtbabar:
I’m sure that most of us (hopefully) have started to edit our variety of papers for our social media portfolio and I wanted to share editing and proofreading ideas.
For me, I usually start by editing sentence-by-sentence first, trying to make each sentence structurally better than before. After I…

Laurel Papworth →
I was surfing around the intertubes when I found this website called LaurelPapworth.com, The Business of Being Social - Online Community News. The article I read is called “Twitter Lists I am on” and it suggests that the twitter lists you are included in say things about you to other twitter users. I did not find this concept nearly as interesting as one short passage in her...
Why do you Facebook?
I’m reading all this buzz on these most recent blog posts about the value of unfriending on Facebook. I can’t lie, it’s something I have often considered but never gotten around to doing. The only people I have ever unfriended so far have either annoyed me or embarrassed me. So what does “friending” really mean on Facebook? Certainly it does not necessarily mean that...
